Newmyer's Seven Nuts how to play

Omaha is a game of re-draws. Newmyer's Seven Nuts is a game about planning your re-draws.

Your initial hopes / concerns are to flop a monster. One of the easiest ways to do that is to flop a big set. If you are dealt trip Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, you should discard one of those cards, and hope to end up with top set, and hope that that turns into the nut boat.

But, with that said, you need to be careful of small sets (and I call small sets anything from trip 10s down.). With these sets, and this game, it is quite possible to end up with a boat, and lose to a bigger boat. There is one possible exception to this rule, and this is that (since it is a high-low split game), if you are dealt trip 5s, 6s, 7s, or 8s, these hands have a slightly higher than average chance of turning into quads, because those players that have nut low draws tend to donate those cards to the board in hopes that enough low cards come to make their low qualify. (Lows must qualify 8-or-better). So, while you may throw one of your three 5s, you might get lucky and get the case 5 from one of the other players. Anyway, this might be too much stategy for the moment. Let's just give a couple of examples, and go from there. We'll start with some simple / obvious ones, and then move on.

After you've read all of this, check out how a sample hand might be played here.

EXAMPLE #1

This hand has lots of low potential, and the only high potential is a possible nut diamond flush or a low staight. Therefore, the Jdiamonds isn't needed, and one of the 3s can be discarded without any concern. You should discard the Jdiamonds and the 3spades. Keeping the 3clubs does give you a tiny flush draw with clubs (which would never in a million years win), but also a small straight flush draw. Upon re-arranging the cards, you are left with this:

From here, you should donate the 4diamonds, which you will more than likely see on the board again at some point, and you have a killer low-draw and a possible nut diamond flush (keeping in mind you threw away a diamond, so you actually have one less out than you think, if you actually do see two diamonds on the flop). Here's what you are holding:

your donation card:

If you see a couple of low cards on the flop (especially if you see two other low cards and DON'T see your 4diamonds, you should start betting and raising hard. You are drawing to the nuts, and you know there's a good chance you will get there. Of course, be wary of chopping the low and possibly getting quartered or sixthed. (There's always a small chance that a low straight could actually win high, as well, so you might scoop.)

EXAMPLE #2

The opposite of Example #1. This hand has lots of high potential, and no low potential. Not only can you not make a decent low with the 2, 6, or 7, but you would choose not to throw the 2, 6, or 7 because with a hand like this, you don't want ANYBODY to have a low. You want to scoop the entire pot with Kings full, ideally. You do have two possible second-nut flush draws, but that's only a distant plan B to your main objective here: flopping top set, becoming top boat and getting paid off by a smaller boat which is almost always out there. Therefore, the 6diamonds and 10diamonds should be discarded. You are left with this:

At this point you donate the Kclubs (may as well keep the two King-high flush draws, and not care about keeping the 10diamonds already discarded, as that only gave you a small broadway straight draw anyway), and you hope to see it come back as soon as possible. If not, you hope to see low un-paired hearts and spades, and hope that maybe you can make a good flush. But be careful: rarely does any flush but the nut-flush win this game (as many will hold cards similar to Example #1 above). Here's what you are holding:

your donation card:

You should probably raise every street here, unless you see an Ace. An Ace tips you off that somebody might have a set of Aces (or they are being very crafty with their low draw), but in general a big set like this when you KNOW it is coming is a monster hand and will win. You should definitely raise pre-flop. After that you maybe keep raising or slow down upon whether or not you see your card on the flop (since there's always a chance you won't hit your set.)

EXAMPLE #3

This is just a crap hand. Nothing really to do here but do your best and hope you can hit a nut straight or a magic set of 10s or a straight flush or something. But, really, not much potential here, and you hope to see a flop cheap (or don't, if you want). Maximizing and trimming, toss the 3hearts and the 4diamonds. You are left with this:

From here, you should donate the 9clubs. You shouldn't keep the 4 diamonds from earlier to throw here, because your 10-high flush draw isn't likely to win, and you don't want (ideally) there to be any low... if you do flop open-ended or a straight, you don't want low hands in there pumping the pot and making it cost you too much to stay in. So, throw the 9clubs and hope for a straight (or that somebody else throws a 10.) Here's what you are holding:

your donation card:

You're not likely to win with this hand, but it does happen. Players throw 6s, 7s, and 8s in hopes of their nut lows qualifying, so sometimes a middle straight can miraculously end up the nuts. But don't spend too much money trying to make it happen. There's a very good chance that, even if you flop a straight, it won't hold up.

EXAMPLE #4

Less analysis now, I'll just say what I'd do. I'd discard the Khearts and 4hearts. I'd be left with this:

Now I would donate the Jclubs. Here's what I'm holding:

your donation card:

I'm hoping to flop a set of Jacks and have Jacks-full with the hand. But I could hit a straight or a Jack-high flush or a straight flush, and I'm hoping there's no low. I need to proceed with caution, but I'd be optimistic about this hand.

EXAMPLE #5

Discard the 9 and 10 of clubs. Re-arrange to form this:

Donate the 8diamonds, hoping for a nut flush or a decent low hand. Here's what I'm holding:

your donation card:

I'm hoping for three diamonds or to see a 2 on the flop. If I see that, I'm probably sticking around. If not, I'm getting out of there. This is a below average hand, and it's easy to pay off an A2 low with your A3.

EXAMPLE #6

Discard the 5diamonds and 4clubs. Now you have:

I probably donate the Qspades, hoping for a nut flush or high straight draw. You could make an argument for throwing the 9diamonds and holding the pair of Queens and hoping somebody else happens to throw one of them, but I'd probably not. Here's what I'm holding:

your donation card:

This is probably a below average starting hand, so I'd proceed carefully.

EXAMPLE #7

This is a garbage hand. I probably do something silly with it. I have an A3 low draw, one nut flush draw, two small pairs that could possibly turn into sets (but probably won't, and even if they do they might still lose to a bigger set). So, I probably toss the K and 6 of diamonds and leave myself with this:

Donate the Aclubs, just to fuck with people. Fuck up people's nut flush draws, their lock low draws, make people with sets think there's a set of Aces out there, etc. Here's what I'm holding:

your donation card:

I might fold pre-flop with this hand, and just sit back and watch the fun. This is a good time to go to the bathroom and get another beer from the fridge.
