go see them, and yell out that they play "divide and conquer".

( i paid them to do a cover of it while on the road with them... and it was
actually pretty good.)

but... if you talk to them, don't tell them that you know me. tell them you
heard they did a cover of it at some show while reading some message board or
something. (or don't, if you don't want to... but it would probably freak them
out more... well... who knows. whatever.)

hello, hairy beast.

here's how a scene from the decemberists show went:

pause between songs
me: "Divide & Conquer!"
my friend Curtis, who books shows: "Divide & Conquer!"
singer, to me: laughing, "Were you there?"
me, in back of the club: "I heard about it on the internet"
singer: "Ah... the internet."
pause
Curtis, on the other side of the club: "Not really, there's a story there!"
singer: "Well, do you have 35 bucks? That's what it's going for."
me: "Maybe..."
Chris, the bass player: "I'm more interested in the story"
me: "35 bucks for a story!"
singer: "Wait. Now we're paying you?"

later, Chris said he wanted to do it, but since they just got off a 22 hour!
drive, everyone else was a little spent.

I heard the full story, about you taking back 7 bucks**2**. funny. Also, they all
said hello.

footnotes to the footnote: (i feel so david foster wallace)
**1** Clearlake, and therefore the decemberists, started calling me chewbacca at some point on tour.
**2** After the show I walked up to Jenny and just sort of looked at her and said "I think we have some unfinished business." She sheepishly reached into her pocket and handed me my $7 back.
